THE PLACE The forests of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are home to some of the world’s last Mountain Gorillas and Grauer’s Gorillas. Protecting them depends on a connected landscape of protected areas, ecological corridors, and community-managed zones, and on the people and institutions working across borders to safeguard them. THE CHALLENGE The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund needed a clear, multi-year roadmap to guide gorilla conservation and community collaboration across two countries. The challenge was to translate decades of field experience into an evidence-based strategy with measurable goals, one that linked conservation priorities to the landscapes and communities on which gorillas depend. |

OUR APPROACH GCS supported the development of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s 2030 Strategic Plan, shaping a multi-year roadmap for gorilla conservation and community collaboration across Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through professionally facilitated workshops, we integrated local and scientific data into the planning framework, defined success for the organization and the roadmap of strategies to achieve it, and mapped indicators to track impact over time, keeping the team focused on its long-term goals throughout. RESULTS & IMPACT A 2030 Strategic Plan providing a multi-year roadmap for gorilla conservation and community collaboration. A clear SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented, and Time-bound) definition of success and a roadmap to achieve it. Local and scientific data integrated into a single, evidence-based planning framework. Measurable indicators to track impact across the organization’s projects and programs. |

“Our team really enjoyed working with GCS to develop our strategic plan. The facilitators’ knowledge of conservation was a real value add, and they did a great job of keeping us focused on our long-term goals and identifying how our proposed activities would contribute to achieving them.” |
